Submit ManuscriptArticle types
JEQ accepts multiple types of submissions, including but not limited to:
- Scholarly Essay: A scholarly essay with reasoned discourse supported by relevant citation of sources. The writing can be of any focus of discipline (e.g. history, philosophy, sociology, etc.) as long as it pertains to the aim and scope of the journal.
- Commentary Article: A commentary article is a response to a scholarly essay.
- Translations: Original translations in English of primary or secondary sources pertaining to Jesuit education.
- Reflections on the Living Tradition: Reflections should engage with the educational heritage and tradition of the Society of Jesus and their apostolates. Submissions should fit within the focus and scope of the journal and should include one to three sources, broadly defined, for further engagement.
- Opinion Articles: An Opinion Article is an opinion piece that makes a clear argument about a topic related to Jesuit education and are not meant to be tools for public relations.
- Book Review: A concise evaluation of a scholarly book, summarizing its content, assessing its significance, and aiding readers in assessing its suitability for academic purposes.
Submission requirements
Manuscript Format
- Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition)
- Abstracts for Scholarly Essays should be included on a separate page (150–250 words) with three to five keywords for indexing purposes
- Include all notes, bibliographical references, etc.
- Figures/tables/illustrations should be labeled and numbered according to the Chicago Manul of Style and attached separately
- Manuscripts should be in English. Non-native English speakers are strongly encouraged to have a native speaker, preferably one with knowledge of the field, edit their work before submission.
Length
- Scholarly Essay: ~4,000–8,000 words, including references
- Commentary Article: ~1,000–4,000 words, including references
- Reflections on the Living Tradition: ~2,000–4,000 words; may include notes with bibliographical references
- Opinion Articles: ~750–1,000 words
- Book Reviews: >1,000 words
Editorial and Peer Review Process
Articles may be submitted at any time and, if accepted, will be published in the next available issue to enter production. Submitted manuscripts will undergo an initial screen by the editor(s). The editor(s) will assign the manuscript to peer reviewers with expertise in the mansucript’s content, methodology, and/or submission type. Peer reviewers provide consultation about the quality of the manuscript and potential fit with the journal’s mission and interest to the journal’s readership. The editor(s) make the final decision about the manuscript.
Publication details
After a manuscript is accepted for publication, author(s) can expect copy-editing and to receive proofs with author queries to respond to in a timely manner. JEQ does not charge author(s) for any part of the publication process.

Authors of articles published remain the copyright holders and grant third parties, via a CC-BY license, the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons license agreement.
It is the author(s)’ responsibility to obtain print and online permission to quote material from third-party sources and to cover any costs incurred in securing these rights. The editors should be alerted at the earliest opportunity as to any difficulty in securing these third-party rights.
